There are two specialist areas of training in a full CompTIA A+ program; you're thought of as A+ competent when you've achieved certifications for both of these areas. Once you start your A+ training program you'll become familiar with how to build and repair PC's and operate in antistatic conditions. Diagnostic techniques and fault finding are also on the syllabus, as is remote access. Should you be thinking of maintaining networks, you should add Network+ to the CompTIA A+ training you're doing. Including Network+ will put you in a position to command a more senior job role. Alternatively, you may prefer the Microsoft networking qualifications (MCP, MCSA and MCSE).

Make sure you don't get caught-up, as can often be the case, on the accreditation program. Your training isn't about getting a plaque on your wall; this is about employment. Begin and continue with the end in mind. Never let yourself become one of the unfortunate masses who select a program that sounds really 'interesting' and 'fun' - and end up with a plaque on the wall for a career they'll never really get any satisfaction from.

You'll want to understand the expectations of your industry. Which particular exams they'll want you to gain and in what way you can gain some industry experience. Spend some time considering how far you wish to build your skill-set as it will present a very specific set of accreditations. Have a conversation with an experienced industry professional who understands the work you're contemplating, and who'll explain to you a detailed run-down of the kind of things you'll be doing on a daily basis. Researching these areas before commencement of any study path will save you both time and money.

A expert and practiced consultant (in direct contrast to a salesman) will cover in some detail your abilities and experience. This is useful for calculating your starting point for training. With a strong background, or maybe some live experience (possibly even some previous certification?) then it's likely your starting point will be very different from a student that is completely new to the industry. For those students starting IT studies and exams for the first time, it can be helpful to avoid jumping in at the deep-end, kicking off with a user-skills course first. Usually this is packaged with most accreditation programs.
